If Brattleboro is the artsy day trip and Bennington is the historic one, Manchester is the upscale one. A polished resort town since the 1850s, Manchester pairs designer outlet shopping with the Lincoln family summer estate, a 3,848-foot mountain drive, and some of the best trout fishing in the country – all in one walkable stretch of southern Vermont.
It’s the longest of the three day trips from Valley View Villa – about an hour each way – but the mix of attractions easily fills a full day.
The Drive
Two route options from VVV. The fastest in winter is Route 9 west to Bennington, then Route 7 north – about 1 hour and 50 miles. Route 9 is a state-maintained four-season road that gets plowed quickly after storms. In spring and summer, take VT-100 north to VT-30 west through Jamaica and Bondville instead – it adds ten minutes but the valley scenery alone is worth it.
Start at Hildene
Robert Todd Lincoln – Abraham Lincoln’s only surviving son – built Hildene as his summer estate in 1905. The 24-room Georgian Revival mansion sits on 412 acres overlooking the Battenkill Valley, and it’s the closest thing to a presidential home you’ll find in Vermont.
The house tour is well done, but the grounds are the real draw: a formal garden laid out like a stained-glass window, 1,000+ peonies that bloom in mid-June, a working goat dairy and cheesemaking facility, and 12 miles of walking trails. Robert Todd Lincoln was president of the Pullman Company, and one of his Pullman railcars – the 72-foot Sunbeam – is on display.

The Outlets
Manchester Designer Outlets are clustered around Manchester Center in an open-air village layout – no massive parking garages, just storefronts along tree-lined streets. Three picks if you only have an hour:
- Talbots – Outlet pricing on the classic women’s basics that hold up year after year. Easy stop for blazers, sweaters, and shoes at meaningful discounts off retail.
- J.Crew Factory – The factory line is a step down from full-price J.Crew but the quality is solid for kids’ clothes, summer shorts, and chinos. Stack the in-store coupon with the price tag and the savings stack up.
- Theory – Worth a stop if you wear suits or structured workwear. Discounts on a $400+ blazer make this a destination, not just a browse.
The Vermont angle: no sales tax on clothing. On a $300 jacket, that’s roughly $18 you’d pay in Massachusetts but don’t pay here. At the top: panoramic views of the Green Mountains, the Taconics, the Adirondacks, and on clear days, the White Mountains of New Hampshire. A Carthusian monastery sits near the summit – an unusual sight in Vermont.
Open Memorial Day weekend through October 31, daily 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM (last car admitted at 4:00 PM). Orvis and the Fly Fishing Museum
Orvis has been headquartered in Manchester since 1856, and the flagship store is the biggest and best-stocked Orvis retail location in the country. Even if you don’t fish, it’s worth browsing – dog gear, outdoor apparel, and a casting pond out front where you can try rods before buying.
Next door, the American Museum of Fly Fishing houses the world’s largest collection of fly fishing artifacts – rods and reels owned by Hemingway, Eisenhower, Winslow Homer, and Jimmy Carter. Small, well-curated, and a perfect stop for anyone interested in the sport.

The Battenkill River
If you fish, the Battenkill is one of the most famous trout streams in America – wild brown and brook trout in waters that have drawn anglers for 150+ years. Catch-and-release in designated sections. Manchester is the longest drive but the easiest to turn into a full 6-8 hour day. If you’re coming for one day trip this season, make it Brattleboro or Bennington. If you have a week at VVV and want all three, do them in that order.
We time our Manchester trips around the weather more than anything else. On a bright, cool day we point the car north early, because the drive up Route 30 through the valley is honestly half the reason to go. The stretch past the old Dorset marble quarries and the weathered farmhouses puts everyone in a slower gear before you even hit the first outlet. We tell guests to fill the tank back in Wilmington on the way out, since prices tend to climb the closer you get to the resort towns.
Our own routine has shifted over the years. When our kids were small, we did Hildene first while everyone still had energy for the walking, then let them run out the afternoon at the outlets while Laura and I traded off. Now we flip it: coffee and a slow browse in the morning, Hildene’s gardens in the low afternoon light when the crowds thin out. If you only make one stop, we would steer you toward the grounds over the shopping. The house is lovely, but the meadow trail down toward the Battenkill is where our family actually remembers the day, and it costs you nothing but time.
