There’s something deeply satisfying about standing on a ski slope in July, launching a disc toward a basket 300 feet downhill, and watching it sail against a backdrop of green mountains. No lift ticket required. No special skills. Just a handful of discs and a course that uses the ski terrain in ways that are genuinely clever.
Mount Snow’s disc golf course plays 18 holes across the lower mountain, weaving between ski trails, through tree lines, and across open meadows. It’s been a staple of the summer lineup for years, and it’s free to play – one of the few things at a ski resort that doesn’t cost anything.
Course Location and Access
The course is laid out at the Carinthia base area – the southern end of the resort, the same side that hosts the terrain park in winter and many of the bike park’s gnarliest lines in summer. Park at the Carinthia lot, walk to the first tee, and start. There’s no check-in, no booth, no fee. Free is free.
From Valley View Villa, it’s a 7-minute drive up Route 100 to Mount Snow. If you want a longer disc day, pair the Mount Snow course with Horace Hill in West Dover (2 minutes from VVV) for a half-day, two-course outing.
Discs: Bring vs. Rent
If you have your own discs, bring them. If not, you can pick up a starter set at the mountain’s base lodge or pro shop – most resorts in this area sell three-disc starter packs (driver, midrange, putter) for under the cost of a lift ticket lunch. Three discs are all you need for a casual round. The base shop sometimes loans demo discs informally; ask at the counter.
The Course
The layout takes advantage of the mountain’s natural terrain. Holes play uphill, downhill, through gaps in the trees, and across wide-open fairways where the wind off the mountain actually matters. Several holes use the natural fall line of ski trails, so you’ll get throws that fly farther than anything you’ve launched on a flat course.
The front nine is more open and forgiving – good for warming up or playing with kids. The back nine tightens up with wooded lines and longer distances. Hole 14, a downhill bomber through a narrow gap in the birches, is the one people talk about afterward.
Baskets are well-maintained and easy to spot. Tee pads are marked. It’s not a pro-tour course, but it’s well above the “random baskets in a field” level you’ll find at a lot of resorts.
Round Time and Kids
Plan for 1.5 to 2 hours for the full 18 at a casual pace. The front nine alone takes about 45 minutes. You’ll cover roughly two miles of walking on uneven ground, so wear shoes you’d hike in.
For kids: most 8-and-up players are genuinely engaged for a full round if they have their own disc and can throw 100+ feet. Younger kids (5-7) do best on the front nine – wider fairways, shorter holes, easier line of sight. Bring water and a snack since there’s no concession stand on the course itself.
Seasonal Access
The course is only playable in snow-free months. Late May through October is the realistic window – the front nine sometimes opens earlier in dry springs, and late-October rounds are doable until the first hard snow. In winter, the same terrain is a ski trail. Check the resort’s site if you’re traveling on the shoulder.
Playing Tips for First-Timers
Disc golf takes five minutes to learn and years to master, but the Mount Snow course is forgiving enough for a real first attempt. Start on the front nine. Focus on a smooth release rather than power – most beginners throw too hard and the disc veers into the trees.
On downhill holes, aim lower than you think. The disc will carry farther than expected with gravity on your side. On uphill holes, use your midrange instead of the driver – accuracy matters more than distance when you’re throwing into a slope.
Also: Horace Hill
For a second round or a more casual outing, the disc golf course at Horace Hill Recreation Area in West Dover is worth knowing about. It’s a shorter, flatter layout that winds through a sugar maple grove – good for beginners or younger kids. It’s free, virtually never crowded, and 2 minutes from Valley View Villa. Start at Horace Hill to warm up, then head to Mount Snow for the main event.

🐕 Dogs welcome on leash
We got into disc golf almost by accident. A guest left a driver and a putter in the game room a few summers back, and one slow August afternoon our whole family walked up to try the course with borrowed plastic and zero technique. We were terrible and we laughed the entire round, which is exactly why we keep recommending it now. You do not need to be good at this to have a great two hours on the mountain.
A few things we have learned that the sign at the first tee will not tell you. Bring more water than you think, because the front nine climbs and the sun on the open slopes is stronger than it feels. Wear real shoes, not sandals, since the grass gets slick in the morning and the fairways run downhill fast. If you have a dog with you, this is one of the best outings around, but keep an eye out for other groups’ discs in flight. And go early or go near dusk. The light on the surrounding peaks in the last hour before sunset is the part nobody photographs well but everybody remembers on the drive back to the villa.
